Mother's Day

Modern-day Mother’s Day began in the United States, at the initiative of Anna Jarvis in the early 20th century and it’s celebrated on the second Sunday of May for more than 90 countries. It is a celebration honoring the mother of the family, as well as motherhood. Other countries tie this celebration to older traditions - like Mothering Sunday in the UK, International Woman’s Day in Russia, or The Spring Equinox in most of the Arabic countries, that’s why the celebration is on different days than the “original”. These traditions have nothing to do with being or celebrating Mothers but they are historically or religiously significant events. In Hungary, we celebrate Mother’s Day on the first Sunday of May (like Spain, Portugal etc.). So, in honor of the day, I made my mother a mixed media canvas (my very first one) trying to depict all the building elements that “makes up” being a mother.

Vertical and horizontal “bricks” compose the base layer of the canvas. They are just some of the individual “jobs” that a mother does to nurture a family:

• teacher

• chauffeur

• event organizer

• seamstress

• judge/jury

• maid

• doctor/nurse

• hairdresser

• chef

• bodyguard/lifeguard

My favorite bit is a quote that is also the biggest truth:

“The One, who can replace any- and everyone but can’t be replaced”
